| need info on Alaska fly fishing |
Question:
I will be heading to Alaska in late July/early August. The general plan is to start in anchorage and head (driving) toward Fairbanks, taking in a bit of Denali along the way. We are interested in doing a little hiking, camping, and fly fishing (I will be taking a 5 weight rod and am interested in walk/wade fishing). I don't know anything about the area yet and I would welcome info on fishing spots, fly patterns, good fly shops, useful web pages etc. I could probably stand to get a guide for 1 day so guide recommendations are welcome also.
Answer:
I've always gone to fish Alaska with locals so I cannot help you with guides, but, BUT, I can say carry your gear on the plane with you - do not check your rods as they can sometimes wander off to a different airport and getting them to the bush two days after you arrive can be costly.
Also, bring twice as much mosquito juice as you think you'll need. I found a
USMC issue bug net that elastics over my hat and at my neck to be a godsend!
Local surplus store about $3.00. The little bastards get in your eyes, nose, ears etc and can make a man mad.
