Bamboo fly rod book - suggestions?
Question:
I frequent a number of antique shows, flea markets, etc., and see a lot of bamboo fly rods...the general asking price has been between $100-$200. Is there a book that identifies bamboo rods and appraises their value? Even something that provides some general guidelines would be nice. I keep thinking about buying one to use, but don't know enough to spot a reasonable price. I can determine the condition of the rod, but not its value. Did they make a gazillion or is this a hand made masterpiece? I just don't have that kind of knowledge. All suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Ideally, I am looking for a 4wt bamboo...there are lots of small streams and creeks in North Georgia that my 6wt is really too much rod for, although I use it anyway......

Answer:
You might try Mike Sinclairs book "Bamboo Rod Restoration" It sells for about $25 and has sections on several different rod makers and their rods, along with identifying information, from reel seat design, ferrules, and even thread wrap colors. Then you would probably want to get some catalogs from the major cane rod dealers and get a feel for what the asking price of different rods is.
