Help for bass fishing
Question:
I will be vacationing on Mackinaw Island next week, and I'd like to do a day of small mouth bass fishing or salmon fishing on Lake Huron. I am looking for general advice like what type of fly to use.

Answer:
You may be able to solve two problems with one fly. I have found that smallmouth love bombers as much (probably more then) as salmon (though salmon like them in rivers and I have never heard of them being used in lakes). If you have some larger sized bombers tied up in any colors give them a shot for smallmouth by fishing them like a bass bug. Cast out under a tree over rocky bottom and let it sit about 30 seconds (providing there is no current - such as in a lake - if there is then cast upstream in slow water and let it dead drift a little ways). Then point your rod at t and give a good sharp yank with our line hand and it will give a nice pop-gurgling sound and let it rest again for awhile. Just go along the shore and around rocks early in the morning and in the evening and you should pick up some fish. I like the bomber more then most bass bugs for smallmouth because of the hackles. I think they give it a real buggy appeal that most cork etc poppers lack. Black, brown and green are my favorites. I do not know how this will work where you are going, but it works great for smallmouth in New Hampshire, Maine and Washington. Expect a great fight, for the same weight a smallmouth will often exceed a rainbow in jumps and power (though it will not run as far).
