Buying a used boat? Good idea?
Question:
I have the opportunity to buy a used 1999 Stratos 285 18'10" boat with a 175 Evinrude Ficht motor on it for $24,000. I have a computer printout from the motor showing the hours used. It's been run for 72 hours and was used only as a tournament boat. The guy buys a new boat every year for tournaments (would be nice to be rich). 40% of the hours used are under 1000 RPM, about 40% are from 1000-3000, 10% from 3000-5000RPM & the rest over 5000. This sound reasonable because most of the lakes here in CT are less than 450 acres and is only 1 or 2 miles long max, so there's no real chance to go 70+ for very long. The boat is fully loaded and in mint condition. Does this sound like a good deal? What is the depreciation on something like this? If I wanted to sell it in 3 years & owed say $17,000, would I end up owing more than it's worth?

Answer:
I'd check around if I were you, they sell that boat for less than that here new. It would make a difference if the new warranty was still available or, if the boat had been titled.
