I'm off to Ottawa for a few days. Anyone know of any good rivers for trout fishing?
Answer:
The rivers nearest Ottawa with reliable trout fishing are in the northern Adirondack Mountains of NY State (Franklin City. Salmon R., Ausable R. etc.) distance is about 3 hours' drive.
Nearly all nearer streams (tributaries to Ottawa R. or Lake Ontario/
St. Lawrence) have not supported trout for many decades. Trout are stocked in many lakes 50 to 100 miles from Ottawa, but seldom reproduce because of heavy competition from bass and perch.
Brown trout have recently reproduced successfully in the big
Ottawa R. but are very scarce. Smallmouth bass fishing in the
Ottawa R. can be excellent (15 last night in a little over 2 hrs.)
