Fly rod
Question:
I have an ugly stick 9ft Lite spinning rod. I use it sometimes, with a small bubble float and fly, as an alternative to "fly fishing” proper. When fishing for mackerel, off the rocks. I bought an old 3" fly reel from eBay, I thought it was a centre pin but it seems too deep for that. In any event it only cost a few quid it works fine and could hold fly line. I have seen at the tackle stall my local market indoor market cheap fly lines (£5). My question would be, as I know little about fly rods. Could I use the Ugly stick spinning rod with a fly line? Very soft tipped rod with a through action. What is the difference between a fly rod and a spinning rod?

Answer:
There is basically no difference per se. The position of the reel seat and handle is a problem. It will not be easy to use this as a single handed fly-rod, although it can be done. You could also even modify this if you wished, without too much trouble. (Cut the butt below the reel seat for instance, and turn it into a "removable" fighting butt, by adding a spigot ferrule to it).The only other "problem" as such will be finding a line to match the rod. How much does the stuff you usually cast with the rod weigh? As you already use a bubble float for fly-fishing, is there any particular reason why you wish to use a fly-line instead? There is not much difference in the techniques themselves, apart from the different casting of course, and you will almost certainly find that you can not cast a fly-line as far as you can a bubble float.
