Question:
I fish the small rivers and streams of Northern New Jersey with ultra lite spinning gear. Now I want to get started in fly fishing.
Can anyone recommend a starter outfit for me -- rod, reel, type of line etc?
Brand names and models would be appreciated.
Answer:
I've used an 8' GLoomis IMX (Gary Loomis Signature Series from the early
90's) for 4wt for a number of years, and have been very happy with it as a logical replacement for my 4'6" and 5' ultra lights. Tough to cast any distance in any kind of wind, but if you're fishing the Flat brook,
Paulinskill or Wallkill like me, distance is not usually a big issue.
Recently up-graded to 7'6" GLX, which I haven't used yet. Some would probably argue for a 5wt, which I have, too, but seldom use, and a 7' GLX for 3wt, which is really "ultra light"! The key point to understand is that the lighter the weight, the higher the skill level required to cast; but when you know no better, you rise to the level required. (I only had the
4wt, so that's what I learned on!) I'm recommending these only for type; brand is somewhat subjective.
Reel need only have click and pawl drag, as long as you can palm the spool.
I recommend you visit a good fly shop, or tackle shop that specializes in fly fishing. If you need some local names contact me directly.
