| What is the etiquette for tipping fly fishing guides? |
Question:
I think if I was sight-fishing in New Zealand - which I hope to do but have to either (a) convince my wife that's it'd be a great place to visit or (b) get to know a lawyer - I'd agree because I'd need the help to find the fish.
But fishing in, say, Hazel Creek in NC, I'd just as soon the guide enjoy the day too and merely point me in the right direction. I'm not hiring an instructor - I'm hiring a guide - but would appreciate advice if I'm clearly screwing something up.
I've never used a guide, though, so can't speak from experience. I'd just feel ill-at-ease with somebody standing behind me watching every move.
Answer:
In many situations here a guide is imperative. Heck, most places where the best sight fishing is I don't fish alone as often the fishing calls all the
"play" from a vantage where he or she has a better sight of the fish than the one doing the casting.
I understand what you saying though and one of the skills of a good guide is to put someone at ease in such a situation.
