| Help needed for fly fishing present |
Question:
I would like to buy my husband a simple cheap fly fishing pole and flies for his birthday. He used a friend's equipment and had only fished a few times. Could someone please tell me what I could get) to get him started. I would like to know, what kind of string, pole, reel and flies are good for a beginner.
Answer:
Wal-Mart does carry "combo" outfits (Cortland, for one) that are complete with fly*rod*, reel, fly line and backing. You can't go too far wrong on those for the money spent. Try to look for a 5 or 6 wt outfit; they will have it on the box. Alternatively, if you have a local fly fishing shop, you might check them out as well. The people running those places are fly fishermen, and can answer your questions. Our local Orvis shop even carries these inexpensive combination outfits.
You don't say where you are or what he would fish for, but here goes with some sort of basic trout-fishing suggestions:
I'm pretty sure that Cortland makes a shrink-wrapped package that includes a 5 or 6-weight graphite rod, an inexpensive reel, and the proper size line. That should cost you around $75.
Add a small plastic fly box and put in it a couple of as many as you can find of the following. The flies come in various sizes, but size 14 to 16 is probably good for starting out.
