Question:
I am interested in taking up fly fishing. I would like to know what a good fly rod and reel would cost and a good brand name for beginners, thanks.
Answer:
Look at the Sage Discovery Series rods in about a 5 wt. Great rod at a good price and a lifetime guarantee. As for the reel, look at the Orvis
Battenkill Series. Nice and sturdy with a decent drag at about $100. The Sage Discovery should go in the mid 200's. Buy good stuff that you can keep a while and your interest in fly fishing is likely to last longer. Fishing with decent equipment helps with your frame of mind. If you want to make a step up, look at the Sage VPS series rods at about
$375 for a 5 wt. in a 4 piece, and the Sage large arbor reels. Very light, very well made. There are lots of good rods and reels out there, find a fly shop that has been in business for a while, handles several brands, and will let you try out the equipment. The good stuff costs a few bucks, but believe me, it is well worth it.
