| Fishing near Anchorage |
Question:
I've occasionally dropped in to lurk in this group, but haven't posted in a long, long while.
Anyway, I'll be in Anchorage for a couple of days the end of July and wanted to try to get in a day of fishing. Don't know much about the situation up there and looking for any advice anyone can provide.
Preference is for Trout, but Salmon's OK. I'd like to use a guide if,
I can find a good one at a reasonable rate; otherwise I'll have to head out on my own.
Answer:
I’ve responded to several inquiries in these groups, hope not to get flamed. I’m a river guide here in Alaska; I live on the Kenai Peninsula. If you take the drive down to the peninsula, it would be worth your while as compared to the outlying areas of Anchorage. Cooper landing, south of Anchorage is a tourist trap, be wary. End of July there are still plenty of sockeye salmon to be had and
July 31st is the end of king salmon season. Trout and char are available, but are more an end of Aug and Sept fishery. There are people that will try and sell you otherwise, but I don’t want to insult your fishing abilities with 1.5-2.5# fish. The thing to do is if you want a guide, do an all day trip. Fish for kings in the morning, switch to sockeye salmon fishing, then cap it off with some rainbow fishing. Well, hope this info has helped. I wish you a pleasant flight and a good time in the last frontier. When choosing a guide, please pick and Alaskan resident guide.
