Question:
I need more gear! I'd like to ask for your opinions on various options for carrying gear. I have a 10 year old Stern's inflatable fly fishing vest....
Answer:
Let me suggest something I just tried and found "refreshing." I call it the
"Divest" which is to say no vest at all. I just spent a week on a backpack trip in the Sierra and wasn't about to hump along my usual full catastrophe of a vest. I made up one of these necklaces with the minimum stuff I needed to fish attached--nippers, a couple of spools of tippet, bottle of fly-floatum, forceps, and a perforated 35mm film can for used flies. I made the necklace out of a couple of feet of 1/4" hard polyethylene tubing cut up into 1.5" chunks strung on a piece of nylon cord. Between about five of these chunks I put snap swivels for attaching the stuff. I allowed myself one box of well considered flies that would fit in a shirt pocket. I didn't miss the vest at all, and have come to the conclusion that in large part a vest is just something to which to attach that short list of items that need to be readily accessible. I will be fishing more like this. If I need to carry lunch etc., a small rucksack with good waterproof qualities makes more sense than the vest.
