| US Fly Reels |
Question:
I'm going on a business to San Fran next month, and am interested in purchasing a fly reel for #10 line + approx 250yds backing. I'm aware that the US makes any quality fly reels such as pfleugler (sp?), marryat, lamson, sage etc. However in the UK these reels get very little exposure and due to import taxes are mighty expensive. My trip seems an ideal opportunity to look at some of these reels.
I'm looking for a reel of similar (or better) quality than the Hardy Ultralite (Disc drag, and machined from BAR STOCK alum.....previous thread suggested that all hardy reels are pot metal...I assure you the ultralite (and sovereign) are NOT)). This retails for 170 UK pounds. My budget would therefore be approx. 260 US. I'd appreciate the opinion of anyone with personal experience of fishing with any such reels....
Answer:
I have a JLH that is one of my favorite reels -- they do seem to be made from pot metal. There are several reels in the price range you mention that you might examine: Ross Gunnisons are sturdy and well made from good bar stock as is Lamson, another fine reel in that price range. For slightly more you might look at the large arbor Bauer reels that in a ten size are around 340 dollars. The Sage 5500 will hold a ten line but it is about 550 dollars and for that amount of money one the finest choices around is the new large arbor TIBOR reels that are about 500 also. The TIBOR is my favorite large rod reel -- I used one in Alaska last summer and it did everything I wanted, plus it is beautifully machined and elegant looking.
Another less well known brand, but one you will probably find in SF is the Galvan -- a good buy.
