Looking for Fishing Tackle Wholesalers
Question:
I am trying to learn a little about the fishing tackle industry. I am curious about several things: a. do most bait and tackle retailers buy their tackle inventory from a middleman, i.e., tackle wholesaler? b. If above is yes, where can I find these wholesalers? c. If the answer to (a) is no; is inventory purchased directly from manufacturer? Via annual show? Via manufacturer reps? Why am I asking all these questions? I have been trying to find a few lures that absolutely NO retailers in this area carry. Most of the retailers are large chains, so the buying is done by a buyer in a different market and it appears is buying the "best sellers", not necessarily the best lures. I want to develop a business plan for a different tackle center. But, I need info.

Answer:
Most tackle shops buy from about aprox 20 major tackle wholesalers located throughout the U.S. Most of these shops will use 2or 3 wholesalers as their primary source of merchandise. I have worked in the wholesale industry for 20 years and i must tell you that most wholesalers will not furnish you with any information unless you are set up as a dealer. You must realize that catalogs & costs are confidential and are not furnished without the proper identification. This would include 1) state tax license 2) vendors license (some states) 3)photo of store(some wholesalers)!
