| Montana, Wyoming and Yellowstone Park |
Question:
Going to Montana, Wyoming and Yellowstone Park area in late July.
Staying in Cooke City, Montana. Need advice on best places to fish, what to use, or any other useful advice. This is my first trip to fish out that way.
Answer:
Near the end of July water levels should be down to near normal levels
BUT be sure to stay in touch because Montana, Wyoming, & Yellowstone Park have about 200% of normal snow levels this year. This is more snow than we had last year and I was not able to guide the Yellowstone River until the first week of August.
The end of July is the start of hopper season so be sure to have plenty.
My personal favorite hopper pattern is the Henry's Fork hopper but there are lots of other good ones as well (Whit's, Daves). For YP you'll need a selection of medium to small nymphs both bead head and non. Sparkle duns in a range of sizes and colors as well as the old regulars like the humpy, elk hair caddis, muddler, royal Wulff, parachute Adams, etc.
There are several web sites about fishing in YP. Do a net search and keep an eye on them. Also check the Montana stream flows. You can find that address on my web site at http://www.btsflyfishing.com then click on "weather & water" and go from there. As a fly fishing guide I use the stream flow report daily, it will tell me if there was a bad storm in
Yellowstone Park last night and give me an idea which direction I want to take my clients on any given day. A sudden change at the Soda Butte gauging station means muddy water is heading down river from Yellowstone Park. Good luck.
