Budget fly fishing in Alaska
Question:
We're a small group of Norwegian fly fishermen who are sketching out a trip to Alaska to go for salmon. Problem is, that money is an issue. I've already had the Yakutat lodge recommended. Does anybody have any experience with this lodge? Does anybody have any other budget lodge recommendations? What about doing a trip outside of the lodging business as an edition to a stay at a lodge (not necessarily for salmon)?

Answer:
Best way to fish Alaska on a budget is to rent a van or camper; and drive to plenty of fishing spots. My wife and I spent nine weeks there and had no trouble finding plenty of all three types of salmon for easy catching. On day we tried to catch trout feeding on the salmon eggs and spent full day catching 20 lb salmon on a 5wt rod with a wolly bugger. You can pull over and camp anywhere along the road; you don’t need to fly in to secluded lakes or stay at a fancy lodge if you just want to enjoy the good budget life.
