| building a fly rod... |
Question:
I am thinking of building a 2 wt fly rod. Does anyone have any comments about the kits that Hook and hackle have? Also are there any other sites that sell kits for fly rods? Thanks in advance for the great advice that I know will be forthcoming.
Answer:
My experience has always been good with hook hack on items other than fly rod kits mainly because I have purchased my rod components from other resources. However, I would purchase a rod kit from hook hack without hesitation and have considered doing so very recently. The main thing to consider is what components the kit contains - type of blank, type of reel seat, insert, hook keeper, stripper guide, snake guides, tip top, wrapping thread, epoxy, etc. If you build a rod, make sure you build what you wish to have as your end product. Sometimes it is worth purchasing the kit along with any other "upgrades" you want incorporated into your rod.
Where are you located? It would be good, depending on your rod building experience, to locate a local person who builds rods. Chances are a local fly shop or club will be able to help you locate an experienced rod builder. We meet every Wednesday night locally to build, help build, or give instruction to folks wanting to build a rod at Norm Goheen's shop/office/garage. A lot of other fly fishing subjects are often discussed as well.
For what its worth, good rod building to you!
