| Considering Fly Fishing... |
Question:
I'm currently considering taking up fly fishing (nearly all of my experience thus far has been in the spinning world), and have been getting bits and pieces of information about the sport from this newsgroup for about a month now. One question bugs me regarding the price of the equipment when compared to other fishing equipment: must one spend hundreds of dollars to truly enjoy the sport? It just seems to me that a fly rod/reel combination is much more expensive than a good spinning combination. I find it hard to believe that "state of the art" hi-tech rods, reels, lines, etc. are absolutely necessary to thoroughly enjoy a sport that has been around for hundreds of years! How much of the exorbitant price of fly-fishing equipment is just brand name hype and esoteric? Is it possible to spend less that $50 on an "acceptable" fly rod/reel combination?
Answer:
Frank, there's a couple page review of low cost fly rods in the March issue of "Fly Rod & Reel". The rods reviewed range from in the $30+ (US) range and up to about $120 (US). Try to get a copy.
You're still going to need a reel & line for your rod and since you didn't say what type of fishing you're going to be doing, you're going to pass on more info if you want help from the group. But a used good reel might be better than a cheap new reel. Same can be said for the rod. Try your local tackle stores.
