| Alaska Fishing trip mid-late August |
Question:
I'll be visiting a friend in Anchorage August 15-24 and will be meeting up with some old college buddies to do some fishing in the Anchorage (MatSu
Valley) and Homer (Halibut/King charter) areas. Can anyone recommend any
out-of-the-way places that should be included other than the typical tourist traps?
I'm also looking for some good fishing spots that the locals may know about as well. I'm a beginner fly fisherman and thought perhaps the best thing would be to immerse myself in the best fly fishing around.
Answer:
Be sure to fish the “Fishing Hole" on the Spit in Homer. Great size silvers come in there and they are trapped in the pond at low tide making catching them a lot easier. Tackle buster charters was a great guide service for Halibut. We got 50 or 60 Lb ones not far from the English bay. That was 1/2 day charter. If you take the full day charter, it is about $ 150.oo but you go out farther and are likely to catch 100 Lb + Halibut.
There are public showers in town at Homer. I do not know what they look like but I can’t imagine they are too clean since the Chinese motel I stayed at was as dirty as the worst Indian run motels I stayed at in Los Angeles.
Taking a bath in the bay is probably the cleanest place in Homer to wash up.
