| Casting vs. Fly Fishing for Bass |
Question:
Someone asked how to explain to the general public how fly fishing for big bass differs from bait casting or spin casting for huge bass. What are to biggest differences in your opinion?
Answer:
Most of us here don't use fly fishing gear- although in certain situations, it might prove more effective in catching bass than other methods. For one thing, with a roll cast, you can put the fly right back on top of the bass and keep it in the fish zone nearly indefinitely.
One problem with fly fishing is the type of cover/structure big bass utilize. I dare say that a large bass running into a cypress root tangle or Lilly pads will DEFINATELY cause problems with fly fishing gear! But if Larry Dahlberg can go after monster pike with a fly rod, bass should prove no problem.
I have caught bass on both fly fishing gear and bait-casting as well as spinning gear. I have to admit that a bass (or just about any other fish!) on a fly rod is a real joy. What a fight! But I tend to have more confidence in bait casting and spinning gear for most bass fishing situations.
