| Beginner rod setup |
Question:
I just obtained my first rod and am attempting to line it. Was hoping some of you veterans would help me out. How long is the backing supposed to be? If the leader is tapered is there still a tippet? How long should the tippet be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
For those good fellas who are trying to help me line my rod. The rod is a 4wt. and the reel is a Cabelas Canehill II. The rod is 8ft. It was a beginner setup and provided with 100 yds of backing some fly line and a
12 ft. tapered leader. No tippet was provided. I am no sure how much fly fishing line I have it is unmarked. I plan to do pan fishing and trout fishing with this setup.
Answer:
Cabela's list the 4/5 wt canehill ii as having a 95yd backing capacity.
Those numbers are approximate, but you should be able to put most of the backing on it.
As to the leader, the last 3 feet or so is the tippet end, it should have an X designation, so if you want to stick with what you have buy the same size X designation tippet to add to the end.
When I fished frequently, I would put a new 4x leader on all of my reels, I would move up or down depending on the tippet size I wanted to use. I use the rule of thumb of fly size divided by 4 for tippet size when using trout flies down to size 8, anything bigger I use a 0X tippet.
Anyway get a good book like the LL Bean or Orvis Introduction to Fly fishing, join a club like a Federation of fly fisher's group or Trout unlimited chapter if one is near by, or visit a fly shop and ask questions.
I'm not trying to start a flame and will help you anyway I can as will most people on this board, but what you are going through and the questions you are asking is the major reason why I do not suggest new fly fishers go to Cabela's or some such for their first equipment. A tackle shop would have put that thing together for you and given you some basic instructions on knots, tippets, and probably casting.
