Question:
I have never fly fished in my life and I have recently purchased my first
Fly fishing reel at an estate sale in the DC area. I don’t know anything about fly fishing, but since I have always wanted to get into it, I figured that buying the pole for five dollars was a good deal. It is a Berkley Avenger
AC 40-8' no 7 line, or at least that is what it says on the pole.
The crux of this post is that I want to know what a good book to get started with would be. Also, what type of fly reel do I need for this pole? What type of line? Are there any websites I could check out with casting techniques, knots, etc? Most of the ones I have found for beginners are not really good; they are very confusing, at least to me.
Answer:
What you have is a 7 Weight rod. You will need to get a 7 Weight line. Most likely, a floating line, weight forward. The package will be marked "WF7F."
But the line you will choose will be dependant on the type of fishing you plan on doing. The book I mention below can help you learn about fly lines.
Also I will list a few websites that can help you too.
You will need a reel that will hold a 7weight line and about 150-200 yards of backing (at least 20 pound braided Dacron.) You can look around and find cheaper reels like a Martin at K-Mart/Wal-Mart, or you could go to a fly shop and buy a nice reel priced anywhere from about $120 up to $500 or more.
I'm not sure of any good books that will teach you how to cast, but the "L.L. Bean Fly Fishing Handbook" by Dave Whitlock could be a start. It's the book I read that got me started. If you really want to learn to cast, go to your local fly shop and check to see if they offer fly casting lessons. Having a professional instructor teach you how to cast will get you casting in a matter of minutes, and you won't learn any bad habits from trying to learn yourself.
You can check out these websites for learning about fly fishing. Search them and you will learn about knots, lines, etc., etc.
