| Eastern Sierra Pack Trip |
Question:
I am thinking of taking a pack trip in the eastern Sierra this summer. The outfitter I have identified is Frontier Pack Train out of June Lake, Ca.
The trip is advertised as being in the Ansel Adams Wilderness with the following areas fished over the course of five days.
Crest Creek, Clark Lakes, Thousand Island Lake, Headwaters of San Joaquin
River, Algers Lakes, Rush Creek, Anglers Lake. I am thinking of going mid July.
The price is nominally $550 or $895 if you want the privilege of going on a week when Ralph and Lisa Cutter are the guides.
If you have an informed opinion on the area and time in general or the outfitter and guides, the favor of an E-Mail would be appreciated.
It’s a toss up between this and another trip to the Green. The tie breaker is that my lady doesn't fish (yet, but I'm working on that) but she loves to trail ride!
Answer:
From what I've heard, the Cutters are very well respected in this area.
They have a www page; a web search should find it for you.
They also have their own classes they offer, one week of lessons and traveling around local streams. But they book up full early in the season, if they aren't fully booked already.
Now if it were me, I'd take the guide money, buy a few books, make my own wilderness permit reservations, buy some new fishing gear, and head out on my own. But that's just what I'd do if it were me.
Believe it or not, the True Value hardware store up in Truckee has a reasonable
Fly Fishing department, and they have the Cutter's brochures as the Cutters are or were based out of Truckee.
