Saltwater Fly Fishing Gear
Question:
I've been doing some reading on Saltwater Fly Fishing, and may be inclined to give it a whirl. I got into surfcasting last year, and had a blast. I plan on fishing for stripers along the Merrimack River/Plum Island area in Newburyport, MA. I would like some advice from people who fly fish this area: What kind of tackle would you suggest for a good overall setup? From what I have been reading, a 9 - 9 1/2 foot 9 weight rod seems to be a good choice. How does this match up with the waters/current/fish in the Newburyport area? I currently own a 7/8 weight rod that I used to use for bass/trout fishing, would this rod be 'good enough' to get a taste of saltwater Fly fishing, or would the current and surf overwhelm this setup? Reason being that I would rather not spend a lot of money on a saltwater rod, without testing the waters first to see how I like it.

Answer:
Give your 7/8 a try. I have fished for stripers with my salmon rod (7 weight) and did fine. However, if a really big boy chomps your fly you are in for a real struggle. The only thing is to go on days when the wind isn't too bad. A 9 weight with 10 lines casts much better in the wind.
