San Juan River Fly-fishing?
Question:
We are planning a fly-fishing trip on the San Juan River (near Navajo Dam) in October. We'd appreciate any tips on fly selection, techniques, other nearby areas, sights, restaurants, etc.

Answer:
Everything you need will be at the "town" of Navajo Dam. Main store is Abe's. I've fished the San Juan many times. Huge fish and plenty of company. River is very murky - almost entirely nymph fishing with very small flies often rigged with droppers. On the way off the river, though, my partner caught a 24-inch rainbow on a plain old Micky Finn. I strongly recommend hiring a guide. at least for the first day. All are available from Abe’s, including Abe's son "born and raised on the san Juan. Have a great trip.
