| Shark Fishing At Sanabel FL |
Question:
Just spent three days surf fishing at Sanabel Island in Florida.
Fishing for pan fish was slow so decided to bait the shark. Instantly they wrecked my tackle. Planning to go back and would like to do surf fishing for shark. Need to know the type of tackle and gear to really work for these guys.
Answer:
There are plenty of large as well as small sharks inshore in that area.
Fishing at night will increase your chances. The type of tackle will vary with the size of sharks you wish to catch. The small stuff, bonnet heads,
Black tips, etc. can be handled on fresh water tackle. The black tips fight well and a large one 50+ lbs will probably strip you but hat is part of the fun. The larger sharks, hammer heads, bull sharks, tiger sharks will need specialized tackle if you encounter any large ones. This means 50 lb or larger tackle. You can get by with braided wire leader with the small ones but not the bigger ones. Except the nurse sharks. I have caught some large ones 8+ feet with 80 lb mono leaders.
Bunch Beach which is on the main land between Sanibel and Fort Myers beach was always a good place for sharks. It is usually deserted at night. Be aware that swimmers will not take well to your shark fishing where they are swimming.
