Question:
I have been looking for a boat, something plastic between 8 and 12 feet. I work at a Gart Sports and we sell a Coleman Crawdad, a flat bottomed fishing boat. I also found a webpage with a "fold up boat" (porta-boat.com?) that can make a 12 foot boat fold up to be only 4" thick. It would work, but I had to order a price list so I have no idea how much they are.
If anyone has a plastic hulled (or a similar light weight boat) that would fit on the roof of my 4runner I would appreciate some feedback. I can order the crawdad directly from Coleman (proform it) and get it for around $300 (reg. $550). I'll be willing to spend about $400 for it. I just can't wait for the ice to melt!
Answer:
I used to own a Crawdad and really liked it. Have you considered a similar size aluminum boat? I my 1975, 12’ aluminum John Boat is lighter than my
Crawdad was. But for the price you’re talking, I don't think you could beat a Crawdad. Just keep it out of the sun.
I had a Mayflower sailboat - 12' long, 90 lbs. I carried it on top of my small car using a rig similar to this:

A carrier like this might offer you more options in choosing a boat.
There was a fellow selling the folding boats at a show near me (plastic and now aluminum too) they went for close to $1,000.
