| St. Croix Fly Rod |
Question:
I have been fishing for quite a while now but I am just now getting into fly fishing. I live in southern California so the places to fly fish are somewhat limited. Anyways a few years back I purchased a 5 weight Cabela's fly rod combo and have been using it since. Although I like the reel a lot, the pole has too much of a slow, glass like feel to it and I want to upgrade. One brand that I am looking at is St. Croix. I have heard good things about them but haven't really known anyone who's used one. My ultimate dream would be to get a Loomis, Sage, or Orvis but they are all out of my pocket range. If anyone has had experience or knows of someone who has had experience with around a 5 wgt St Croix fly rod I would appreciate any comments you could give me.
Answer:
You won't go wrong with St Croix. I own both an Orvis and St Croix.
And let me tell you if I had to do it over again, I'd buy St. Croix before anything else. I think buying a Sage, Orvis, and Loomis is just a status symbol. As far as quality St. Croix can’t be beat. They make rods for many rod manufacturers, who just paste their names on it. I only live about 2 hours away from the St. Croix factory in Wisconsin and have been there several times. Everything is made by hand, and top notch quality.
Currently I own 4 St. Croix rods, and I'll put them against anyone else's.
If you look at the Legend Ultra series (new this year), it has features that are on the other guys rods for half to two thirds the price. Go buy the St. Croix. You'll enjoy it
