Is it still fly fishing if you use live bait?
Question:
My dad used to use a floating fly line to fish night crawlers in Oak Creek for trout. Presentation was exactly the same as using a heavy wet fly otherwise. I was reading something recently and thinking that it would be a good way to get a little more distance dead sticking a small minnow. (Then again maybe not. That minnow would sure get dried out swinging through the air. Is it still fly fishing if you use live bait?

Answer:
And, it you substituted one of your little plastic minnows for the live one; you're back to pure fly fishing. It doesn't make any difference. In fact personally I'm very interested in what new things ALL bass fishermen are doing and enjoying. It may be blasphemy to fly fisherman but my grandson and I are having a blast with Rodney Long's Wiggle Rig. With Power Pro on a Shamano spin reel mounted on my 9 1/2 foot 9 weight Loomis fly rod, my grandson has used worms and plastic minnows to catch bass and bluegill. As a fly fisherman I am just amazed at how far it throws!!!! It would be a short hop for us to switch to live bait. Hmmm... You've got me thinking. Whoa! Is it still fly fishing if I use plastic worms with a spin reel with Power Pro instead of a fly reel and fly line?
